The development of refrigerators is a long history which can be traced back to 1000 BC when the Chinese cut and stored ice in order to chill food. In the late 1700s, William Cullen of the Glasgow found the means of changing gases into liquids artificially. The thermodynamics principle he used started the history of private refrigerators. Jacob Perkins is another very important person in the history of refrigerators who invent the first refrigerator called "Ice Making Machine". This "Ice Making Machine" used the principle of compressing vapors to lower the inner temperature of refrigerator. In 1855, the first successful refrigerator was created by John Gorrie. Top freezer refrigerator is a type of eye level freezer one which gives you more convenience to use but you should bend to take out the foods on the shelves at the bottom of refrigerator. Bottom freezer refrigerator is very popular for allowing to storage the frequently used food at eye-level but has less storage space than the top one. Side-by-side refrigerator has the benefit of preventing cold air from flowing out when opening the door of freezer. Built-in refrigerator has great functions and a lower price. It seems fashionable both in style and color.

After studying about the history and types of refrigerators, let us come to techniques of selecting a refrigerator. The first thing you should think about is the place you want to put your new refrigerator. Because the space determines the dimensions of the refrigerator you will choose. Besides, if you are a person who constantly goes to supermarket, you will need to select one with larger storage space or if you live alone, you can choose a smaller one to cut the expense of electricity. At last, to use refrigerator in a correct way is also very important. Food with strong and special smell should be sealed before putting into refrigerator and the door of refrigerator should not be opened frequently for it will decrease the effectiveness of refrigerator.
